Abstract

Sintering behavior of 15% yttrium-doped barium zirconate (BaZr 0 85Y0 15O3-δ) and 15% scandium-doped barium zirconate (BaZr0 85Sc0 15O3-δ) are investigated from the viewpoint of phase relationship. A relative density of more than 99% was achieved for BaZr0 85Sc0 150 3-δ, which is greater than that for BaZr0 85Y 0 15O3-δ. Larger grains were obtained for BaZr 0 85Sc0 15O3-δ whereas sintered BaZr 0 85Y0 15O3-δ was a mixture of larger and smaller grains. Scandium is a more promising dopant for barium zirconate from the standpoint of low density of the grain boundaries and uniform grains.
