N1 - Funding Information:
The authors would like to express their sincere thanks to Drs. K. Taira, H. Otobe, T. Asai, S. Haginoya, T. Fujitani, M. Endoh, T. Hayasaka, N. Iwasaka and Ms. N. Saigusa, and the members of the Oceanographic Division of JMA: without their suggestion, understanding and help for the measure- ment, this experiment would not be successfully accomplished. Thanks are extended to all scientists, captain, officers and crew of the new R/V Hakuho Maru cruises, i, e., the testing cruise in August 1989 and the cruise of Around-the-World, for their cooperation. This experiment was made part of OMLET and part of J-COARE (Chairman: Prof. A. Sumi), which were financially supported by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Science and Culture.

N2 - In situ measurement of the solar radiation was made during 166 days from August 1989 to January 1990 over the sea south of Japan, by using a small-sized pyranometer which was attached to the moored surface buoy system. In this prompt report, the daily mean values during 135 days from August to December 1989 were reported and the monthly mean values were compared with the available data which were mostly estimated by other authors using the various empirical formulae for the experimental area.
