Abstract

We synthesized novel iridium complexes bearing paraphenylene or tetraphenylmethane ligands. The solution absorption spectra of 3a-c show an MLCT band together with the local excitation transitions of their ligands. Solution emission spectra are red-shifted and weakened as compared to that of Ir(ppy)3. This result indicates that the introduced π-conjugated groups markedly affected the photophysical decay process. In contrast to the case of Ir(ppy)3, the film emission spectra of 3a-c are observed because of prevention of concentration quenching due to the bulky ligand groups. Organic electroluminescence devices using the iridium complexes show green emission.
