Abstract

Nanoquasicrystallization and local structure of Zr-based metallic glasses were investigated. The nano icosahedral quasicrystalline phase (QC) is formed in the Zr70Al10Ni20 ternary and Zr 70Oi30 binary metallic glasses with a high stability of supercooled liquid state by addition of a small amount of noble metal. The QC formation proceeds without the significant change of local structure. We can propose the icosahedral local structure in these QC-forming metallic glasses. We also investigate the correlation between the QC formation and stability of supercooled liquid state.
