Abstract
A major problem in the electric power industry is distribution-line degradation. Nondestructive detection of cracks in a distribution line may be possible through eddy-current testing or measurement of the magnetic field around the distribution line when it is energized. We have examined each of these methods, the eddy-current testing and the distribution of the magnetic field around a conducting wire and around a distribution line, through laboratory experiments. Our results indicate that both methods provide an effective means of detecting distribution-line deterioration.
