Abstract

Magnetic and transport properties of rare earth ternary compounds RPtSb (R = rare earths) were investigated for the first time in this experiments. RPtSb (R = La-Sm) crystallize in CaIn2-type structure. CePtSb, PrPtSb, NdPtSb and SmPtSb show magnetic order at 4.5, 8, 15.5 and 6.7 K, respectively. As for the heavier rare earth members, EuPtSb and RPtSb (R = Gd-Yb) are confirmed to have crystal structure of ∊-TiNiSi- and MgAgAs-type, respectively. Electrical resistivities of GdPtSb and YbPtSb suggest that R3+PtSb with MgAgAs-type are semi-metals. For comparison, physical properties of EuPdSb and YbPdSb, which are isostructural with EuPtSb and YbPtSb, respectively, were also investigated. EuPdSb as well as EuPtSb are metals accompanied with successive phase transitions below TN. On the other hand, YbPdSb shows transport properties characteristics of the dense Kondo compounds.
