Abstract

Five-nanometer-thick Fe film has been grown on self-organized SrTiO 3(001) substrate with an inclined angle (a). The morphology of Fe film was investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Dependence of the magnetic property on the inclined angle was revealed by magneto-optic Kerr effect (MOKE) measurement. In the morphology of Fe film, the surface structure of Fe films is reflected in the features of substrates and their morphologies are affected by the inclined angle of the substrates: a random distribution for smaller angles and a wirelike array for larger angles. The details including the shape, size and height of the clusters are described for different inclined angles. The crystalline orientational relationship between Fe and SrTiO 3 is Fe(001)[110]∥SrTiO3(001)[100]. In the magnetic property of the Fe film, the magnetocrystalline anisotropy governs the magnetic property in the flat surface, while a magnetic uniaxial anisotropy and a magnetocrystalline anisotropy govern it in the substrate with larger angles. The magnetic uniaxial anisotropy is enhanced by the step structure on the inclined substrate. It is clearly shown that the magnetic property of 5-nm-thick Fe films are affected by their morphology.
