Abstract

This paper applies the theory for magnetoelasticity to solve the plane problem of an edge crack in a soft ferromagnetic half-plane subjected to a far-field tension and a uniform magnetic field. Fourier transform techniques are used to formulate the mixed boundary value problem as a singular integral equation. The stress intensity factor is calculated and is shown graphically. Tensile tests are also performed on a cracked ferromagnetic plate with strain gage technique, and the numerical results are compared with the test data.
