Abstract

On the basis of an aqueous micelle two-phase partition model, a quantitative description is made of analytical solubilization systems involving aqueous non-ionic surfactant solutions. The micellar phase separation method and the acid dissociation method were employed for polyoxyethylene-4-nonylphenyl ether and for Triton X-100, respectively, to determine the partition constants for 8-quinolinol, 2-(2-thiazolylazo)-4-methylphenol, 4-nitrophenol and 2,4-dinitrophenol. The constants for 8-quinolinol in the two surfactant systems agreed to within an order of magnitude. The mechanism of the solubilization processes is discussed.
