Abstract

Since the universal steering vector (USV) which is equivalent to the array element pattern or the array manifold has successfully been applied to estimate direction of arrival (DOA) of incident wave based on multiple signal classification (MUSIC) algorithm using the array antenna with arbitrary geometry, it is further applied to joint estimation, of DOA and polarization without separating the signal received by array antenna into two orthogonal polarizational components in this paper. The formulation of joint estimation of DOA and polarization proposed by Schmidt is modified with using two USVs of Kθ and Eφ, components. The simulation results using array antenna consisting of one monopole and 2 planar inverted-F antenna(PIFA)s mounted on a conducting plane and the array antenna consisting of 7 monopoles mounted on a conducting box demonstrate the effective the proposed estimation method. The comparision between the estimation results of DOA obtained by two USVs of Eθ and Eφ and those obtained only by USV of Eθ or by USV of Eφ indicates that accuracy of DOA estimation by two USVs is similar to that obtained by one USV when the incident electromagnetic wave has only E θ or Eφ component, and also indicates that the estimation by two USVs is valid and has more satisfactory accuracy when incident electromagnetic waves have different polarizations.
