Abstract
Various synthetic and natural biopolymers have been tested to develop nanocomposites by mixing with nanosized materials such as layered silicate nanoclays, nanosized metal and metallic oxides. Such nanocomposites exhibited increased mechanical and gas barrier properties and decreased water sensitivity with antimicrobial function. These improvements are generally attained at low nanoclay content (less than 5%) compared with that of conventional fillers (in the range of 10-50%).
