New-generation metallic biomaterials

In this chapter, the current status of metallic biomaterials and the research and development of new-generation metallic biomaterials are discussed. First, the traditional metallic biomaterials are reviewed. The alloy design and properties of the new metallic biomaterials, as well as the new processing technologies used for fabricating porous metallic biomaterials and for grain refining are then discussed. This chapter focuses on the following metallic biomaterials: stainless steels, cobalt (Co)-chromium (Cr) alloys, titanium (Ti) and its alloys, magnesium (Mg) alloys, iron (Fe) alloys, Zinc (Zn) alloys, bulk metallic glasses, zirconium (Zr) alloys, and high-entropy alloys. Finally, future trends in new-generation metallic biomaterials are presented.
