Abstract

The authors have investigated a proton-exchange technique for LiNbO//3 waveguide fabrication using pyrophosphoric acid and found that high-index slab waveguides ( DELTA n//e equals 0. 145) with a step profile were obtained by the surface-coating technique, and low-loss stripe waveguides (0. 7 dB/cm) were achieved using this technique with a Ta mask. This fabrication technique could be used in nonlinear-optic and other integrated-optic devices.
