Abstract

The nonlinear mechanical behaviors of vascular beds may have a considerable influence on hemodynamic flows to which cardiovascular diseases are closely related through mechanical and hydrodynamical conditions on the walls. The purpose of this paper is to establish the theory of nonlinear pulse waves due to the nonlinear mechanical properties of vascular beds and to investigate the problem of modulation of pulse waves. The blood in arteries is supposed to behave as an incompressible and homogeneous fluid obeying the Navier-Stokes equation. The vessel is, on the other hand, assumed to be a long tube with slowly varying sectional area.
