Abstract

To consider the competition between the Kondo effect and the crystalline electric field (CEF) single ground state of the f2 configuration, an impurity Anderson model with two localized electrons, only one of which hybridizes with conduction electrons is studied by using the numerical renormalization group method. The ground state changes from a Kondo induced magnetic state to a CEF singlet-like state, when the CEF excitation energy δ increases beyond its critical value δc. Whe δ is a little larger than δc, a new low energy scale which characterizes a break of the Kondo effect appears in the impurity susceptibility and the impurity specific heat.
