Observation of carbon nanotube/elatomer composites by atomic force microscopy

Natural rubbers (NR) reinforced by multi-wall carbon nanotube (MWCNT) were investigated by atomic force microscope (AFM). It was found that increase ratio of storage modulus (E'c/E'm) of CNT/NR composite with CNT of 13 nm diameter was one order larger than that of high-reinforcement carbon black/NR composite. A slender shape of which width was about 100 nm was imaged by AFM, where the local storage/loss moduli were different from both NR matrix and CNTs.
