Abstract
The nonlinear pulling and pushing effects between adjacent solitons have been observed for the first time in a 20 Gbit/s soliton transmission system at around 400 km. Erbium-doped fibre amplifiers were used as lumped amplifiers for fibre loss compensation. The maximum transmission distance at which the interaction was negligible was about 350 km for a pulse width of 18 ps and a repeater spacing of 25 km.
