Abstract

We demonstrate optical couplers with a new multicore plastic optical fiber (MC-POF) that provide presettable splitting ratio and small variation in modal power distribution. They were constructed simply by mechanically removing all or a part of the second clad in the MC-POF. The MC-POF comprises polymethyl methacrylate-based 19 cores with two clad layers. It functions as an optical fiber normally and reliably, but each fiber can be separated individually as needed. The MC-POF couplers have shown remarkable stability in the splitting ratio and the modal power distribution compared with a conventional optical coupler.
