N2 - The tuned viscous mass damper (TVMD) system is a new seismic control system developed by the authors. The basic concept of the present system is the same as that of a dynamic vibration absorber (DVA) or a tuned mass damper (TMD), and the design method proposed by Den Hartog for the DVA or the TMD using fixed points of the resonance curve is also applicable to the TVMD system as long as the primary structure is an undamped single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) system. Although we have proposed a design method for a damped multiple-degree-of- freedom system by using a numerical optimization method, it deals with only single mode control. In this study, design examples of single-mode and two-mode control systems are compared to illustrate the effectiveness of controlling the higher modes.
