Abstract
SMES (Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage) is an interesting solution of energy storage for high power pulse operation. In the framework of the DGA BOSSE project a solenoid SMES is being developed with the objective to reach 1 MJ with a specific energy of 20 kJ/kg for the winding. To reach such performances, REBCO tapes are used in a liquid helium bath at 4.2 K. The BOSSE solenoid consists of an assembly of 21 REBCO insulated Double-Pancakes (DP). Each of these DP is tested in liquid helium bath in standalone up to their rated current before preliminary assemblies which will soon come. In this work, we present the design of the BOSSE solenoid and the preliminary tests of DP. To test each DP up to is rated current, we developed a protection system based on magnetic flux compensation. We describe here the quench detection and the test results of REBCO insulated coils.
