Abstract
Assistive communication devices are available for deaf or hard-of-hearing (DHH) individuals. However, these devices often are only for face-to-face use and cannot provide text or symbol equivalents of verbal communication such as warnings, orders or requests. This paper suggests a new solution by a remote communication system based on an Android Smartphone for text communication from a family member or a health care worker to a DHH individual. This system was found to be good for home use from the viewpoints of coverage, cost, and simplicity.
