Quantum confinement for large light output from pure semiconducting scintillators

The method for the development of fast semiconducting scintillators was discussed. The advantage of low dimensionality in the scintillating efficiency was demonstrated by using the optimum three- and two-dimensional semiconducting systems provided by lead-halide-based compounds. A high-energy proton beam was used to investigate the dimensional and temperature dependencies of the semiconducting systems. The results show that even at room temperature, the quantum confinement system prevented thermal quenching from excitonic level.
