Abstract
The relationship between material flow and abnormal grain growth in friction-stir welds was analyzed. It was found that the deformation induced by the tool shoulder during friction stir welding may lead to the formation of a fine-grained layer at the upper surface of the weld, which may give rise to abnormal grain growth during subsequent annealing.
