Abstract
In order to remove impurity elements, such as silicon in molten aluminum, we studied the formation of intermetallic compound of the impurity element. This report discusses removal of silicon with an addition of calcium to form intermetallic compounds. In the experiment, Ca2Si and CaSi2Al2 were allowed to form in Al-5%Si and Al-10%Si. The results showed that the silicon concentration in the molten metal could be reduced from 10% to 4.5%.
