The authors thank H. Tokunou for his cooperation in the high oxygen pressure heating, Y. Muraoka for his help with the SQUID measurement, and K. Takada for the chemical analysis. We are also grateful to E. Aoyagi and Y. Hayasaka for their help in taking electron diffraction patterns. This research was supported, in part, by the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture, Japan through a Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research on Priority Areas, ‘‘Science of High-Tc Superconductivity’’ and a Grant-in-Aid for New Programs under Contract 05NP0501. It was also partly supported by the High Field Laboratory for Superconducting Materials, IMR, Tohoku University.

N2 - (RE1-xSrx)8Cu8O20 compounds were prepared for RE = Pr (x = 0.35) and RE = Nd (x = 0.40) under 100 MPa of 20% O2-80% Ar gas (PO2 = 20 MPa) at 1273 K. Their crystal structures characterized by X-ray diffraction and electron diffraction are tetragonal, space group P4lmbm, with lattice constants of a = 1.07920 and c = 0.38057 nm for RE = Pr and a = 1.07961 and c = 0.37841 nm for RE = Nd. They are isostructural with (La1-xSrx)8Cu8O20-δ (0.16 ≤ x ≤ 0.24). The resistivity at 300 K was 3.4 mΩ cm for RE = Pr and 7.0 mΩ cm for RE = Nd and decreased with decreasing temperature down to 13 K. The magnetic susceptibility shows Curie-Weiss behavior for both compounds.
