N2 - This paper focuses on the role that a selected yield mechanism plays on seismic design and response of structures. A parametric study was carried out by selecting different mechanism types for design of an example steel moment frame. The results of inelastic dynamic response analyses are presented and discussed. It is concluded that complete sway mechanism of the frame with strong, non-yielding columns appears to be most efficient in terms of required design base shear for a given target story drift.
