Abstract

Small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) measurements have been carried out for liquid (1-) and amorphous (a-) Se to investigate the temperature dependence of the structure in l-Se consisting of chain molecules. SANS intensity, I(Q), was observed in a Q range from 0.005 to 0.04 Å-1 and I(Q) of a-Se was about an order of magnitude larger than that of l-Se. In both spectra, log I(Q) shows a linear dependence for log Q. The gradient for l-Se is about - 2.5 at 500°C. With decreasing temperature, to the supercooled state, the gradient becomes close to -3, which is the value for a-Se. These results suggest the existence of clusters in l-Se derived from density fluctuations.
