N2 - Disintegration of the larval fat body of Sarcophaga, which takes place in the early pupal stage was mimicked by digesting the fat body with chymotrypsin in vitro. The resulting free adipocytes produced in vitro were found to have no activity to synthesize protein. However, their viability, RNA synthesis, amino acid uptake and mRNA content were similar to those of cells in the fat body treated without chymotrypsin. These results suggest that selective cessation of protein synthesis is a prerequisite for remodeling the fat body during metamorphosis.
