Abstract

In the presence of the osmotic pressure difference between inside and outside of a vesicle, spherical vesicles deform to various shapes, such as prolate, discocyte, starfish and so on, depending on an excess area and an area difference. When we couple the shape deformation with the phase separation, the heterogeneity in membranes brings new deformation pathways, shape convergence and directional budding. We discuss the shape deformation pathways in terms of the membrane elasticity model for multi-component vesicles.
