Abstract

Base-free silyl(silylene) complexes of iron and ruthenium Cp*M(CO)(=SiMes2)SiMe3 (Cp* = η5-C5Me5, M = Fe, Ru, Mes = mesityl) can be prepared in high yields by the reaction of pyridine complexes Cp*M(CO)(NC5H5)Me (M = Fe, Ru) with hydrodisilane HMe2SiSiMes2Me at room temperature. The pyridine complexes Cp*M(CO)(NC5H5)Me are prepared by the photolysis of a solution of Cp*M(CO)2Me in the presence of excess pyridine just before use. A proposed mechanism for formation of the silyl(silylene) complexes involving 1,2-silyl shift and 1,3-methyl shift is shown in Scheme 28.1.
