Abstract

Recently, optical soliton communications have been realized with erbium-doped optical fiber amplifiers (EDFA). For such a system, a transmission limitation has emerged due to Gordon-Haus jitters and accumulation of amplified spontaneous emission (ASE); and it has been considered that these degradations are unavoidable in the optical soliton transmission. In this paper, a method called `soliton control' is introduced to resolve these problems. The method is based on the waveform shaping. The modulation synchronized with the transmission clock is added to optical solitons for waveform shaping and the spectrum is shaped by an optical filter. By means of this method, it is shown that the optical soliton can be transmitted over an infinite distance.
