Abstract

The experiment shows that spiral vortices transfer to toroidal vortices not as the local rotational speed ratio S tends to infinity but at a definite value between 6 and 8 for the total included cone angle phi of 15 degree and 30 degree . A cross-sectional flow pattern of the vortices is apparently observed to consist of pairs of counter-rotating vortices. The critical and transition Reynolds numbers and the number of the spiral vortices decrease remarkably as the local rotational speed ratio S becomes larger.
