The XRD experiments were conducted at the beamline BL-18C of Photon Factory, High Energy Accelerator Research Organization (Proposal Nos. 2018G524 and 2018G569). Portions of this work were performed at the Joint Usage/Research Center PRIUS, Ehime University, Japan (Proposal No. 2019A18). This work was funded partially by the JSPS Kakenhi programs (to H.K.; Nos. 17J05467, 19J01467, and 19K14815).

N2 - High-pressure and high-temperature experiments were performed to investigate the stability of methane hydrate under 6-40 GPa and 298-573 K using synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction in combination with a diamond anvil cell. The results thus obtained revealed that methane hydrate decomposes into solid methane and ice VII at temperatures considerably lower than the melting curves of solid methane and ice VII in the pressure range of 6-40 GPa.
