Abstract

A mostly single icosahedral phase has been found to be formed by crystallization of an amorphous Al75Cu15V10 alloy prepared by liquid quenching. The crystallization-induced icosahedral phase is concluded to be a highly stable intermediate product because it remains stable up to high temperatures just below melting temperature (Tm) and changes to equilibrium Al2Cu and Al3V phases only after an annealing time of more than 30 h at 0.99Tm.
