Abstract
Amorphous materials in the system Al]2O3-ZrO 2-SiO2 are of interest in various areas of materials science, such as alkali resistant glasses, chemically stable refractories, glass ceramics or zirconia toughened ceramics. In the present research the glass formation in the SiO2-rich region of the ternary oxide system Al 2O3-ZrO2-SiO2 is analyzed. Gels have been synthesized by the sol-gel method in acid media and then treated up to 1650°C. The presence of Zr and Al ions into the silica network are investigated by means of UV-Raman spectroscopy. The crystallization of gels and the crystalline phases formed at different thermal treatment temperatures as well as phases evolution with the temperature were studied.
