    Abstract

In vitro combined activity of piperacillin (PIPC) and dibekacin (DKB) against clinical isolates of S. aureus, K. pneumoniae, E. coli, S. marcescens, E. cloacae was investigated by use of Dynatech MIC 2000. Excellent combined effects were observed against all of tested species. Synergism (FIC index <0. was demonstrated in 40%, 70%, 36.8%, 55%, 47.1%, in above mentioned species respectively. Bactericidal activity against K. pneumoniae PCI 602 was enhanced by combination of PIPC and DKB. When bacilli were treated for 4 hours with PIPC (1/8 MIC) plus DKB (1/2 MIC), the viable cell count decreased markedly and the colony-forming-unit was found to be 1/100000 of the initial inoculum.
