Abstract

Sum frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopy measurements showed that the conformational order of the self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of alkanethiols on silver surface was strongly affected by alkyl chain length and the nature of the terminal group. The SAMs of alkanethiols were densely packed as far as the number of carbon chain (n) was more than 5 but significant amount of the gauche defects were formed when n was 3. The COOH terminated SAM was less ordered than CH3 terminated one.
