Abstract

Correlation of structure and property: Ba2Mn2Si 2O9 consists of Mn2O8 dimers made up of two basaledge-sharing MnO5 square pyramids. Magnetic measurements show that this material displays a spin-singlet ground state with a large spin gap. The spin-dimer analysis suggests that the origin of the spin gap is likely to arise from a large intra-dimer interaction between the Mn1O5 and Mn 2O5 square pyramids.
