Abstract
A single crystal of a new ternary silicide Gd1.2Fe 4Si9.8 has been synthesized by the Czochralski method and characterized by X-ray diffraction, magnetization, specific heat and electrical resistivity measurements. It has an isostructure of hexagonal Er 1.2Fe4Si9.8 with the lattice parameters of a = 3.93 Å and c = 15.25 Å. Magnetic susceptibility follows the Curie-Weiss law down to 10 K. Antiferromagnetic exchange interaction is estimated from the magnetization measurements. Two broad peaks were found in the specific heat at 3.7 and 23 K.
