Abstract

We report the synthesis of the a bisfullerene C121, the first all-carbon molecule to contain a homofullerene unit. This unsymmetrical bisfullerene was obtained as the major product of the solid-state thermolysis of a mixture of C60CBr2 and C60. Theoretical calculations showed that the stability of the homofullerene isomer of C121 is higher than that of the more common isomer, the methanofullerene.
