Abstract

A new birnessite-type compound was prepared in K-Mg-Sn-O system by a solid-state reaction. The resulting phase was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential thermal analysis and thermogravimetric analysis (DTA-TGA) and scanning electron microscopic (SEM) analysis. DTA-TGA curves were measured in air to 1200°C at a ramp rate of 10°C min-1. Endothermic peaks at 118°C and 154°C each showed a weight loss. An exothermic peak with a large weight loss associated with potassium was observed at 905°C. SEM revealed the crystal shape and size of the developed phase.
