Abstract

Phyllanthurinolactone (1) and phyllurine (2) have been isolated as leaf-closing and -opening substance respectively, which controls the nyctinastic movement of Phyllanthus urinaria. The HPLC analysis of the content of 1 and 2 on the plant extracts showed that the content of 1 changed through a day, while that of 2 was almost constant. Thus, the nyctinastic leaf-movement was introduced by the change in the content of 1 in the plant, which is controlled by a biological clock.
