Abstract
The thermal diffusion and thermal conductivity based properties of magnetic refrigerants were investigated. The understudied magnetic refrigerants were that of La(FexSi1-x)13 and their hydrides. The refrigerants exhibited large magnetocaloric effects due to the electron metamagnetic transitions over a wide range of room temperature. The La-based refrigerants were found to exhibit larger thermal conductivity than the other candidates for magnetic refrigerants, such as Gd-based compounds and MnAs. Whereas, the thermal diffusivity of the La-based refrigerants in the vicinity of room temperature was larger than that of MnAs and was as large as that for Gd-based refrigerants.
