Abstract

We measured the time-resolved luminescence spectra of CdS induced by 2.0 MeV/nucleon Xe and Ar irradiation. We observed a luminescence band with a fast decay rate, and attributed it to the spontaneous luminescence of the electron-hole plasma (EHP). By analyzing the shape of this band, we obtained the carrier density and temperature of the EHP. The obtained carrier density was quite consistent with the calculated result of the excitation density or electronic stopping power. The small binding energy of the EHP, obtained in this experiment, indicates that the crystal structure does not significantly change in the ion tracks due to the weak interaction of the electrons and lattice in CdS, contrary to the case of alumina and alkali-halides.
