The effects posed by relaxation oscillation and frequency chirping are investigated by calculating the transmission characteristics under LD direct modulation by using the split-step Fourier method. The wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) transmission system consists of eight transmitters that send out unequally spaced optical signals, all modulated by 2.5 Gbit/s NRZ pseudo-random signals. The transmission characteristics of a 320 km DSF with 80 km repeater spacing is simulated considering the change in effective zero-dispersion wavelength. Comparison of transmission characteristics in the cases of LD direct modulation and external modulation showed ignorable effect of relaxation oscillation.
