Transmission electron microtomography on polymeric nano-structures

Transmission Electron Microtomography (TEMT) is a powerful technique for three-dimensional (3D) structural observation and analysis in nanometer scale. In the present study, complicated morphologies of the three-component block copolymers, nanocomposite materials, e.g. carbon black (CB) and silica particles in rubbery matrix, were investigated by TEMT, from which some geometrical and topological features of such structures were evaluated. For the latter, it was found that the TEMT offers intriguing element discriminating function: The CB and silica particles were independently imaged in 3D. In addition to these results, "dual-axis electron tomography", which is a novel and quite effective technique to image anisotropic morphologies such as cylindrical or lamellar morphologies, will be discussed.
