N2 - A new type MHD pump, applicable to high-temperature molten metal in cylindrical ducts, is proposed. A rotating twisted magnetic field is generated by a stator with three pairs of helical windings. Axial thrust, as well as rotational torque, acts on the secondary conductor. Experiment with a transparent duct system was performed to confirm that this induction machine works as a pump, and it is verified that the thrust is actually obtained on experiments with a prototype stator and liquid gallium. This experiment shows the thrust is proportional to the square of the primary current.
