Abstract
Dry sliding wear mechanisms of alumina sliding against bearing steel were studied using a ballon disk wear apparatus. The tribology characteristics of the sliding pairs could be divided into four regimes and consolidated in a simple wear transition diagram with normal load and sliding velocity as the two axies. The controlling mechanism and specific wear amount in each regime are unique and related to the value of nWv (frictional work). As nWv increases above a critical value, a transition in wear and wear mechanism occurs.
