Early internationalization and success in foreign markets play an important role in both a firm’s growth and its impact on the global economy. We conducted a study of Japanese high-tech startups to identify the process of early internationalization in firms with a large domestic market and few incentives to internationalize. We found that international entrepreneurship and the conditions in the domestic market affect early internationalization. Our case study shows that the size of the domestic market is not a deciding factor in a firm’s decision to internationalize. Geographic considerations and types of technology were identified as other factors affecting early internationalization. Our findings provide insights and practical guidelines for entrepreneurs who want to explore ways to globalize their business operations.
