Design activities of ECH/CD system for JA DEMO

JA DEMO is a steady-state tokamak which produces several hundreds of MW of electric power. Electron cyclotron heating and current drive (ECH/CD) system is one of the major components of JA DEMO tokamak, and it is expected to play an important role in its plasma operation scenario. Design activities for JA DEMO ECH/CD are in progress regarding both physics and engineering. Analysis of ECCD physics for current drive efficiency improvement shows that an upper-side injection can produce sufficient driven current by avoiding absorption at second harmonic resonance. RF power for ECCD operation of JA DEMO is expected to be 100 MW at the frequency of >200 GHz range. The conceptual design of the RF power plant represents the location and scale of the building for the RF power plant. The transmission Line (TL) for RF power delivery from the RF power plant to the tokamak exceeds 200 m, and studies of TL components for highly efficient RF transmission are in progress. The concept of the launcher, which combines remote steering technology and phased array, is evaluated by a simulation. A low-power experiment and preliminary results demonstrate that the large oblique angle injection necessary for ECCD operation is possible.
